Threewalls is pleased to announce the full release of its 2013/14 tenth-anniversary artist editions. The gallery commissioned 16 artists to produce work for the series, including three exclusive editions of ten by artists David Hartt (pictured), William Cordova and Daniel Barrow.

Editions of 40 were produced by Alberto Aguilar, Heather Mekkelson, Michael Milano, Claire Pentecost, Cauleen Smith, Montgomery Perry Smith, Edra Soto, Jan Tichy, Philip Von Zweck & Molly Zuckerman-Hartung. A special emerging artist edition, The One Wall, features the work of three artists: Lauren Anderson, Troy Briggs and Allison Wade.

David Hartt's Courier is an extremely close-up image of an IBM Selectric Courier ten-point type element. The depth of field is so shallow as to be only microns deep and the extreme level of detail captured would be invisible to the unaided eye.

Courier references the tradition of exploring the metaphorical potential latent in the histories of industrial objects. Under the guidance of Eliot Noyes, who was acting as an external consultant, IBM introduced the Selectric typewriter and the type element in 1961. This version of the Courier typeface was drawn by Adrian Frutiger, expressly for the Selectric and IBM, deliberately choosing not to seek any copyright, trademark, or design patent protection, ensuring its widespread adoption and use. In fact, U.S. government cables up until the George W. Bush administration were all written using the Courier typeface.

Hartt is interested in not only the history of the object but also in the material way in which it is presented. A compelling artifact of printing, the archaic photogravure method allows photographic grain and material texture to be added to an otherwise pristine digital image. The Courier typeface is emblematic of a pre-digital era despite the fact that it represented the cutting edge of office technology for a time.

Chicago-based and Canadian-born artist David Hartt creates photographs, videos, sculpture and installations that unpack the social, cultural, and economic complexities of his various subjects. His works explore how historic ideas and ideals persist or transform over time. David Hartt (b. 1967, Montreal) currently lives and works in Chicago. He graduated with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. His exhibition Stray Light, a video installation, color photographs and sculptures reflecting on the Johnson Publishing Company, is currently touring the United States. Hartt was a 2012 United States Artists fellow. He is represented in Chicago by Corbett Vs. Dempsey.

Threewalls will be working with David Hartt in 2015 in collaboration with Or Gallery, Vancouver, as part of the exhibition series Slow Frequency.
