New Artists' Space at The Royal Academy

Weston Rooms, Main Galleries

This autumn the Royal Academy of Arts will see the inception of a new programme of exhibitions by its' contemporary Royal Academicians. The programme, entitled Artists' Laboratory, will give them the opportunity to take risks and explore new ideas within their artistic practice and will be a chance for the public to experience less familiar aspects of their work. The exhibition will underpin the Royal Academy's unique position in having artists at its core.

The first Artists' Laboratory in the programme will open in September 2010, and present a series of photographs and paintings by Ian McKeever RA.

ARTISTS' LABORATORY 01

Ian McKeever RA

8 September – 24 October 2010

This exhibition will bring together two different types of work by Ian McKeever RA. Five large paintings titled Hartgrove made between 1992 and 1994, and an ongoing series of around 40 small black and white photographs commenced in 2007. The works are linked by the artist's response to living and working in rural Dorset at different times.

The large paintings were begun shortly after McKeever's move from London to Dorset in 1991. They reflect the expansiveness and openness the artist felt after leaving the city to live in the countryside for the first time since childhood. The primary focus of the paintings is a sense of emerging presence and light; they are built up of thin layers of transparent paint suggesting a veiled surface and inner depth.

In contrast, the photographs feature specific objects and incidents of light observed in the intimate, familiar space of McKeever's home. These photographs exude a very different sense of time, and negotiation of place, compared with the long process of painting. His paintings and photographs are ethereal, enigmatic and concerned with light and the possibility of seeing anew. This will be the first time that these photographs have been exhibited in the UK.
